Bill Plaschke Hates Philly Cheesesteaks for Some Reason

Bill Plaschke faced up against Tim Cowlishaw in the Around the Horn showdown yesterday, and the topic of Mark Sanchez and Philly cheesesteaks was debated. Plaschke said that he thought this was the most overrated food in America. As someone who quite enjoys the sandwiches, I was aghast at the segment. I reached out to the LA Times columnist to see what, if anything, he’d have to say to defend himself. His response:

I’ve never been to Pat’s or Geno’s because they seem like sort of tourist traps, but I’ve been to Dalessandro’s twice in the past year, and found it to be delectable. There was a massive pile of steak on the grill, and the man tending to it was put on this planet to do just that:

My sandwiches were well seasoned and the meat was juicy enough to be flavorful, but not so much so that it made the bread soggy. I also live relatively close to Chicago’s best cheesesteak joint, Monti’s, which is uncompromising on its spiciness, bringing its ‘Rocky’ sandwich right to the brink of the flavor/pain tradeoff:

Lots of people are going to point out that I didn’t get onions or peppers on my sandwich, and therefore don’t eat it authentically, which is probably fair. However, I don’t really like vegetables that much in the first place, and I especially don’t like when they interfere with the flavors of meat and cheese. Maybe Plaschke would enjoy the sandwiches better if he got them from the right spots, customized to his tastes?
