Did Caroline Wozniacki Lose Underwear Endorsement Contract Because of Cristiano Ronaldo?

Here’s an early contender for most-important Internet sports story of 2015. Well, not really. Sarcasm and writing are not my strongest suits. Apologies to everybody who clicked here, truly.

Anyway, here it goes. Back in 2012 tennis star Caroline Wozniacki launched an underwear line with Danish outfitter JBS. The campaign was apparently a hit and the company signed soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo to a similar endorsement deal a year later. Turns out that the Ronaldo underwear is so popular that JBS dropped Wozniacki.

Here’s an explanation via Eurosport, quoting Danish publication Ekstra Bladet.

"“We had hoped to grab a market, but the impact of CR7 has been far, far greater than we dared dream of,” JBS director Morten Alstrup told Ekstra Bladet. “So it is best for the company to stop working with Caroline Wozniacki.”"

Eurosport has more:

"“Caroline Wozniacki is one of the reasons that we have got hold of Cristiano Ronaldo,” Alstrup added. “He had seen how Caroline dared to be pictured in only her underwear that we had made for her, and he liked it.”"

Admittedly I don’t know very much about the garment business, but couldn’t JBS have hired more employees and kept both Wozniacki and Ronaldo’s lines for sale? If nothing else, maybe later in the year we can get a Lionel Messi and Wozniacki to team up together to face Ronaldo and Rory McIlory at Summer Slam.
