Renaldo Wynn Said Gregg Williams Had the Jaguars' Playbook Before the 1999 AFC Championship Game

Renaldo Wynn, a former defensive lineman who last played in the NFL in 2009, made some interesting claims about Gregg Williams during an interview with Mike Melster an Seth Payne on SportsRadio 610′s MaD Radio. Wynn alleged that Williams, then defensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans, somehow had access to the Jacksonville Jaguars playbook prior to the 1999 AFC Championship Game.

Wynn says Williams told him he had the playbooks, presumably when the pair were together with the Redskins in Washington. Wynn said he knew how Williams acquired the playbooks, but wouldn’t elaborate how.

"“You know why we fell short in that AFC Championship game? After that I ended up getting coached by Gregg Williams. And Gregg Williams was, at the time, defensive coordinator by the Tennessee Titans,” Wynn told Payne & Meltser “First thing he said when he came in the door was ‘Hey, you know why you lost?’ With a lot of other explicit words with that. He said he had our play book. Gregg Williams had our play book. Our game-plan on offense. [He] had our playbook.”"

This obviously doesn’t look good for Williams, who is now the St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator. Given his role in the Saints “Bounty Gate” scandal Williams probably won’t receive the benefit of the doubt, even if Wynn claims are never substantiated.

Wynn did offer a backhanded apology to Williams for dragging his name through the mud:

"“I’m sorry Gregg, I had to put you out there,” Wynn said at the end of the interview. “You can’t go no lower than what you’ve been already.”"

Something to consider, during the 1999-2000 season the Jaguars went 15-3 (including playoffs) and all three defeats came at the hands of the Titans. Tennessee won the regular season match ups 20-19 and 41-14. The Titans won 33-14 in the AFC Championship Game in Jacksonville.
