Rudy Gay Nips Raptors Use of Numbers in the Butt, Bans Stat Sheets From Locker Room
By Jason Lisk
Rudy Gay was traded to Toronto last year from Memphis shortly after John Hollinger arrived, a move that was panned by Adrian Wojnarowski. Hollinger did not think as highly of Gay as his counting scoring stats, as things like win shares and shooting percentage were not in his favor.
This year, according to this article, Gay has taken it an extra step to strike back against numbers in his new home, and banned scoresheets from the Raptors’ locker room. I had to include it for this quote explaining why:
"“I wanted to just nip it in the butt before it became an issue,” he said. “We come in here after losses, after wins and people are staring at those stat sheets, but that’s not what we’re about. We’re a team and the stat that matters is the W.”"
I don’t know if that’s a typo or was the actual quote, but I think we can all agree that this is something that should be nipped in the butt. It’s a good thing that Gay nipped it in the butt before last night, so his teammates did not have to stare at his 3 for 12 shooting performance. As it stands, the Raptors are now 6-8 in the only stat that matters–wins and losses.
